Ilfracombe Lifeboat Departure - 19 September 2026

Ilfracombe had enjoyed the sight of our Shannon class Lifeboat, Barry & Peggy High Foundation, since 2015, but the time had come to re-deploy the RNLI’s assets to better effect, minimising the costs of launch and recovery for the all-weather boats, while maintaining the ability to respond quickly to a wide range of incidents around our coastline.

The weather was awful and the IYC’s planned tribute of multiple boats lined up in the outer harbour was reduced to a lot of flags on the boat nearest to the Shannon’s exit route from the inner harbour.  The video clip shows our members clambering around a Westerly Konsort moored near the harbour entrance, along with clips and photos of just about every lifeboat from around the Bristol Channel.
